The History The house was completely redecorated during the 1950’s under the watchful eye of Lady Eira and with the help of the well-known interior designer, at that time, Mrs Monro of 11 Montpelier Street, London. The house remained unaltered for nearly 50 years. 5 decades of entertaining and family life can be demanding upon an old house to say the least therefore an extensive renovation of the property was swung into action some three years ago. Finally we are able to remove the dustsheets and enjoy the results of all the hard work and patience. The original l7th Century farmhouse is a small part of the splendid early Victorian country house, which now stands on the site. The 17th Century mill from which the house gets its name has long been demolished. It is possible, when walking through the house and gardens, to speculate on which sections are the earliest and where the mill may have stood. The present house was extensively remodelled about one hundred and fifty years ago and remains externally much the same today with large Georgian windows in an elegant painted and portioned facade. The roof is arranged in a series of pretty gables and slated pitches. The immediate grounds around the house have large lawns stretching down to the burbling Triffrwd River where the mill once stood. To the left of the house is a large Edwardian stable block with its own courtyard and entrance, which also gives access to the rear of the house. Internally the elegant staircase was added and the principal reception rooms and bedrooms were beautifully remodelled in the 1920's. The Accommodation Up to 18 guests in 9 double bedrooms. The Grounds The design of the gardens follows the design of the house. A new intimate garden is being created on the east side of the house. On the north edge the autumn colours of mature shrubs in a long banked border extend the interest into winter. To the west of the house another newly planted long border has particular late winter interest. The fully restored formal circular pond beyond is centrally planted with white flowers, and filled with water lilies. Behind the house spring bulbs also flood the wild woodland garden. At the eastern end, rhododendrons take over, forming a dense screen to the lane and the river, specimen trees include a stunning magnolia, and a small fruit orchard leads to the river's edge. Alongside the west of the house a charming sitting and dining garden has been created, a large table and barbecue sit on the generous stone flagged area, bordered by scented flowers and fresh herbs for the pot. Beyond the stable block the gently sloping south facing walled garden is being transformed into a traditional vegetable garden, with a geometric layout of paths and beds to provide fresh vegetables, soft fruit and cut flowers for the house for most of the year. Guests will be able to stroll through the kitchen garden, and into the riverside field beyond. | |
