Location

The Beach House is located on a spit called Shoreham Beach, adjoining the quaint harbour town of Shoreham by Sea.  The house stands on the south facing side of this spit which has water on three sides in a quiet, prestigious road which is now locally acclaimed as the next Sandbanks.  The beach itself is a nature reserve with over 70 varieties of plants some of which can only be found growing naturally in 3 other locations in the world.  In the spring and summer parts of the beach are transformed as many of these plants flower to provide a unique landscape rarely seen on beaches in this country.  Five minutes to the west is Shoreham Airport which accommodates private and small charter planes (up to 12 seats) and helicopters.  To the east, is the fabulous, cosmopolitan city of Brighton and Hove which is just 6 miles along the coast (15 minutes by car)
where you will find a wealth of entertainment, designer shops, restaurants and bars.  There are excellent fast train links to central London direct from Shoreham by Sea train station - London Victoria 70 mins, Gatwick Airport 40 mins.

The History

Shoreham Beach is a shingle spit about three miles long, separated from the town of Shoreham-by-Sea by the River Adur, which been has deflected eastwards by the longshore drift over the centuries.  The house is on Old Fort Road, named after the ancient fort which sits dramatically at the entrance to Shoreham Harbour, guarding it from invasion, built in the middle of the 19th century.
During the last World War, the authorities were concerned that this would be an ideal spot for an invasion by the enemy and in an attempt to protect the shoreline, all the houses except three were demolished. As this house had a flat roof, it was retained as it was ideal for lookout and armourments.

Shoreham Beach is linked to Shoreham By Sea via a single road link at the western end and via a footbridge across the river Adur.  Shoreham is referenced in the Doomsday book, the beautiful church St Mary De Haura AD1103 still stands in the centre of the town flanked by fishermans cottages, one of which housed Sir Henry Roberts, colleague of Captain Cook. South of the church is the 13th century Marlipins building, now a small museum.  It is the oldest secular building, still in its original complete form, in Britain.  Previous famous residents of Old Fort Road include Ronnie Corbett, Alan Weeks and legendary pre war boxer Tommy Farr.

The Grounds

The stylish south facing garden is the ideal spot for soaking up the sun, taking a leisurely swim and relaxing, whilst listening to the lapping waves of the sea.  The house occupies the largest beachfront garden on this prestigious road and has sea views as far as Worthing pier to the west and Beachy Head to the east.

The large swimming pool is the dominant feature of this garden and is a few feet from the beach with sea views. The pool is heated by solar power and is usually warm enough to swim in by the end of May. It is 10m x 5.5m, has a curved, roman style end with steps and is flanked on one side by a long white benched seating area.  The pool is surrounded by paving, and there is a vast patio area infront of the house, ideal for sunbathing and bbqs.  There is also a large manicured lawn area surrounded by architectural planting including palm trees and new zealand flax.  There is seating and sunloungers for guests and in high summer, you may be forgiven for imagining that you are in the mediterranean as you sip a cold drink and enjoy views of the pool and the glittering sea just beyond.   In the evenings, the garden is transformed as the pool lights up and the patio becomes the ideal area for cocktails whilst watching the stunning sunsets.  In the centre of the garden, at the end of the pool, the decorative metal gates open directly onto the beach allowing you to effortlessly combine pool and seaside lifestyles in one.

There is a side gate leading to the front garden where there is parking for up to 6 cars on the paved driveway.  This garden has been architecturally designed to create an impressive frontage and entrance, with steps up to the house, two oval shaped lawns and some showpiece specimen plants, including a massive New Zealand flax and a beautiful, gnarled olive tree which is over a century old.
